FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, along with the Lower Colorado River Authority, found a second and third body in Lake Fayette on Monday after a boat capsized Saturday night. Officials recovered the body of another man on Sunday.

Texas Game Wardens said five men were on the boat when it sank at about 10 p.m. Saturday. Lake Fayette is located east of La Grange in Fayette County.

In a statement, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said a body was found after the search resumed on Sunday morning.

Bastrop County Game Warden Sonny Alaniz says side-scan sonar was used to help locate two of the men who died, along with the sunken boat.

Two of the men were able to swim to shore, but the other three did not. According to Alaniz, one of the survivors said they had been fishing. On the way back, their boat started taking on water and then it capsized. The survivor said they had no life jackets on the boat.

Alaniz says all of the men on-board were about 40-50 years old. He says the two survivors had a hard time making it to shore, with windy weather and choppy water Saturday night.

“I know [the survivors are] emotionally — they’re distraught, but they are having some support with their family and friends, as well as they are trying to support the family and friends of the people that were lost,” Alaniz said.

Alaniz says the accident should serve as a reminder to check weather conditions before going out on the water, make sure boats aren’t overloaded and always have life jackets on-board.

“Life jackets are very important, and there’s many times when somebody could have been saved just by having a life jacket.”

The investigation is ongoing, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said.

Lower Colorado River Authority Rangers performed the search with TPWD, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the search.
